Congratulations to Boston Red Legion for winning the Professional Division of the 2010 PSP Mid-Atlantic Open!  The mostly-Russian team finished Saturdays Prelims with 4 wins and a free pass direct into the Semi Finals.

Edmonton Impact beat last week's NPPL champs Tampa Bay Damage in the Quarter Finals matching them up against LA Ironmen who, like Boston also received a free pass into the Semi Finals. San Diego Aftermath defeated Entourage in the other Quarter Finals bracket only to face Boston in the Quarters. (I'm still unsure why Ironmen got a free pass to the quarters when Damage finished top of their table ahead of Ironmen) The Impact Vs Ironmen Quarter Finals was a close match but Impact managed to win 7-6. Boston Red Legion continued their undefeated run beating Aftermath 7-4 in the other Quarter Finals match.

The Finals was a one side affair. Boston Red Legion held Impact at bay and quickly finished the match 7-2. Aftermath dealt similar punishment to the LA Ironmen in the battle for 3rd and 4th place.

Final placings at PSP MAO:

Professional RaceTo-7
1st Boston Red Legion
2nd Edmonton Impact
3rd San Diego Aftermath
4th Los Angeles Ironmen

Division 1 RaceTo-5
1st Chattanooga CEP
2nd Total Karnage Orlando
3rd Hurricanes
4th New Jersey Jesters

Paintball Sports Promotions (PSP) have their Mid-Atlantic Open (MAO) event this weekend at PBC Sports Park, in Rock Hill South Carolina. As one of the two major league paintball promoters in the USA, PSP plays an X-Ball Race to format where teams play timed sessions and must win a certain amount of games against their opponents to take the match (depending on the division played) - penalties also are given against players for minor and major rule infringements which results in these players having to remain off the field for set periods of time, similar to a 'sin-bin' in ice hockey. While the rules can sometimes be confusing, the fast pace of the game is exciting to watch.

This weekend, PSP were forced to issue an advanced warning to players due to the extreme heat forecast for the event weekend, something that most Asian players are very used to every time we play.

The Pro Schedule prelims on Friday and Saturday threw up some surprise results with Aftershock failing to make it to Sunday only winning 1 out of 4 matches and Impact and Aftermath all going 2 out of 4 matches to make the Top 6. Boston Red Legion were unbeatable winning all 4 of their matches and Entourage, Tampa Bay Damage and the LA Ironmen all winning 3 out of 4 matches to progress to play Sunday in the top 6.

Singapore American School expat and former Red Sevens & Red West player Zachary Hagy played at the PSP's MAO event this weekend with team HuSTLe II in Division 2. Unfortunately they only managed 1 out of 4 game wins but I'm sure he had a blast playing anyway.

Meanwhile I've been busy interviewing the big wigs of Asian paintball for a PaintballNews.Asia article. Stay tuned for some interesting info on plans for tournament paintball in 2011.

In more serious action, Tampa Bay Damage once again showed how well their team has adapted to the NPPL 7 man format by winning the Pro event against LA Infamous. San Diego Dynasty came in 3rd with Portland Naughty Dogs 4th. Naughty Dogs had looked strong in the quarter finals but failed to bring this form into the semis. Meanwhile Edmonton Impact failed to make the Semi finals finishing 6th ranked in the quarter finals.

Monday in Chicago at the NPPL started off fine but storm clouds and lightening rolled in over the SPX Sports grounds after 6 games of the Pro Quarter finals matches and caused the webcast crew to flee their 20 foot tower for the safety of lower ground.

In the D1 3 team battle despite a great showing by Warped Army in the Pro-Am prelim ranking1 st and automatically qualifying for the finals, Naughty Dog Silver clawed their way through the Semi finals with Hate Crew  winning 2-0 and then against Warped Army winning 2-0 to take the D1 Championship.

In the Pro Divisions, Dynasty couldn't back up their performance after winning the Millennium Bitburg and Millennium Malaga event last weekend with their Dynasty/ Impact US combo team. They lost lots of players off the breaks and couldn't recover finishing 6th overall. XSV showed some improvement making it to the top 8 after some disappointing tournament results and finished 7th overall. Entourage did marginally better than Dynasty but missed the final 4 cut and finished 5th overall.

The Semi finals pitted Impact Vs Avalanche and Damage Vs Infamous. Damage looked strong during the Quarters and continued this form rolling over Infamous in 2 games. Impact lost their first game to Avalanche but came back in the 2nd match when Justin Connel did a solo run through taking out 4 players to force a 3rd game. Impact went on to win the 3rd match for their chance to take on Damage in the finals.

In the consolation Finals match Avalanche continued their losing streak and lost 2 in a row to Infamous - Infamous taking 3rd with Avalanche 4th place. The Finals Championship match of Impact Vs Damage was a repeat of the PSP Phoenix finals. Damage didn't let history repeat itself and took down the favourites in 2 straight matches to take the title of NPPL Chicago 2010 Champions. See if you can pick the new addition to their NPPL Chicago line-up? Congratulations to the team, their coaches and support staff.

2010 Chicago Open PreLims PDF Print E-mail

Probably one of the hardest skills to learn in paintball in not the physical elements - it is how to pre-strategise games based on a field layout. Team captains should try and use webcasts like NPPL Chicago as an opportunity to practice these skills. If you haven't watched the NPPL Chicago webcast yet then here's your chance. Grab the field layout from the NPPL website (ok it's for 7 Man but the basic principles remain the same) and work out a break-out plan or two... try and work out which are the key bunkers on the field for players to attack and defend from and try and work out which side of the field is the strong/dominant side which you should attack from. Then watch the webcast and see how close your breakout plans come to what the pro teams are using.

The NPPL prelims was an interesting affair with 3 Div 1 teams playing the Pro schedule for some experience (yes because not enough D1 teams registered for the event!!!) I watched about 50% of the games and they were drawn out games in most cases. Dominant were Edmonton Impact, St. Louis Avalance, San Diego Dynasty (minus Greenspan) and the new pros Newport Entourage. who used to be part of the Dynasty camp  Also making the top 8 were Tampa Bay Damage, LA Infamous, Sacramento XSV and Oakland Blast. Interestingly Warped Army, one of the D1 teams playing the Pro schedule did better than some of the regular Pro teams winning 3 of their 7 matches.

The Chicago NPPL finals continue tonight (Asia time approx 9pm).

Sunday 21 March. Edmonton Impact came up against Tampa Bay Damage in the final of the pro division at the PSP Phoenix Open and with both teams having had some memorable matches leading up to the final, a winner was never going to be easy to predict.

Damage started strong and had the early lead getting ahead 3-1 but Impact stayed in the game bringing the match back to a 3-3 points draw. Damage again took the lead the next point but Impact fought back to draw again at 4-4. The next point Impact came out guns blazing and wrapped up the point in under a minute taking the lead 5-4. Damage lost two players early in the next point and Impact capitalised to increase their lead to 6-4. In the 11th point Impact took control of the snake and pushed forward. Damage had no comeback and Impact grabbed the flag and the first pro title of 2010 as PSP Phoenix Open Champions.

PSP Phoenix Semi Finals PDF Print E-mail

After some confusion from the PSP as to who was playing who in the Semis, Impact lined up against Infamous in the first of the Semis. First point went to Infamous but was removed after a penalty and dirty hang. Impact eventually take the first point 1-0. Impact take a 2 point advantage but infamous are never more than one point behind and eventually get their first lead with scores at 3-2. Impact stay close and draw it at 3-3 and take the lead again after the next point. Infamous fight back to draw it 4-4. Infamous start getting penalties and Impact stretch out a lead to 6-4. Another major penalty by Infamous and Impact take the match 7-4.

Damage Vs Aftershock was a quick match. Damage came out guns blazing and raced to a 3 point lead. Aftershock took 1 point back and scores were 3-1 to Damage. Damage won the next point only to have it removed after a major penalty was given to them for overshooting. Not love lost here it seems? Even one man down Damage keep the momentum up and with 4 points in a row to crush Aftershock 7-1 and move on to the finals against Impact. Is it Winter Olympics Ice Hockey payback time?

Aftershock play Infamous for 3 and 4th spots.

Quarters are over. First Pro game of the day was the Russians Vs Aftershock. Aftershock held an early points lead but Boston stayed in the game and eventually forced the match into overtime with points tied at 5-5. Boston were 2 men down in the early stages of the overtime game and Aftershock held on to defeat last year's PSP World Cup winners Boston Russian Legion. Aftershock move on to play Tampa Bay Damage in the first semi final match.

Next match was Dynasty Vs Edmonton Impact. Impact ran out to an early match lead, steamrolling Dynasty to take a 4-0 lead. Dynasty came back at Impact to win 2 points in a row. Impact take the next point and scores are now 5-2 in Impact's favour. Dynasty win another 2 points - scores 5-4 Impacts way. Both teams trade points again and scores are Impact still winning 6-5. Dynasty take the advantage in game 12 with 5 men alive to Impacts 3. Dynasty then make some crazy moves forward and lose players quickly. Impact take out Dynasty's last man Glen Takemoto and win the match 7-5. Impact move on to the semis to play Infamous.
